ASIM - Objectives

The research objectives based directly on the observations taken by the ASIM mission are:

  • Provide a comprehensive survey of the occurrences of Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) and Terrestrial γ -flashes (TGFs) on a global scale;
  • Study the physics of TGFs and their relationship with TLEs;
  • Study the physics of TLEs;
  • Determine the characteristics that make thunderstorms TLE- and TGF-active;
  • Study the coupling to the ionosphere of thunderstorms and TLEs;
  • Study the effects of thunderstorms and TGFs on the Earth’s radiation belts.

Newsflash

2011-07-06: The ASIM System Level PDR has been successfully completed. All actions have been agreed with ESA.

2011-05-26: The ASIM System Level PDR datapackage has been delivered and presented for ESA System Level PDR review. The PDR collocation meeting will take place June 21-23.

2010-08-05: The ASIM Phase C/D contract was signed by ESA and Terma on Thursday August 5th, 2010. This is the official start date of the contract, also known as the kick-off date.
